King Piccolo Saga

An ancient evil awakens, turning martial heroes into prey in a battle where death is absolute.

The King Piccolo Saga marks a pivotal dark turn in the Dragon Ball narrative, shifting from lighthearted martial arts tournaments to high-stakes survival horror. Occurring between the 21st and 23rd World Martial Arts Tournaments, it centers on the resurrection of the ancient demon king Piccolo Daimao, who emerges seeking revenge and to restore his full power by collecting the Dragon Balls. This arc serves as a grim reminder that despite Goku's growing strength, some evils are too vast for brute force alone, forcing the Z-Fighters into a desperate struggle where death is permanent.

Lore & Background

Long before the main series began, King Piccolo was the dark half of Kami, separated by a ritual that purified his evil. While Kami became Earth's guardian and created the Dragon Balls, Piccolo was sealed away inside a specialized vessel—canonically depicted as an electric rice cooker—by Master Mutaito using the Mafuba technique centuries prior. The seal held until Goku and Roshi discovered it in a hidden cave, inadvertently releasing him. Unlike the playful villains of previous arcs, Piccolo Daimao is a being of pure malice who views all other life as inferior. He systematically hunts down former martial artists and their disciples, executing them without hesitation to retrieve every Dragon Ball, aiming to grant himself eternal youth and godlike power.

In Their Own Story

Deep within a ruined temple on an isolated island, Goku and Master Roshi discovered the ancient vessel containing King Piccolo. As the seal broke, a cloud of toxic green mist spilled forth, signaling the return of an evil long forgotten. His first act was not to fight, but to hunt; his disciple Tambourine systematically executed Earth's strongest martial artists, including Bora, shattering the Z-Fighters' confidence before Goku could intervene. When Piccolo Daimao finally confronted Master Roshi, the old master attempted a final sacrifice using the Mafuba technique, only to fail and perish. The boy who had once laughed at danger now stood trembling, his Ki suppressed by the sheer oppressive weight of this ancient evil. For the first time, the hero realized that some monsters could not be beaten with a smile.

Reader's Guide

The saga begins when Goku and Master Roshi discover King Piccolo's sealed vessel in a cave, inadvertently releasing him from centuries of imprisonment. The demon king immediately sets out to collect all seven Dragon Balls, systematically hunting down and killing powerful martial artists who might oppose him through his disciple Tambourine, including Bora and eventually Master Roshi.

With the Earth's guardian Kami weakened by Piccolo's existence, Goku seeks a way to fight back. He ascends Korin Tower, where he drinks the Ultra Divine Water from the tower's summit—a trial that nearly kills him but unlocks his hidden potential. Empowered and finally able to sense Piccolo's location, Goku confronts the demon king in a brutal battle.

Despite being severely wounded by Piccolo's initial assault, Goku lands a devastating blow that forces the demon to spit out his egg, which contains King Piccolo's son and successor, Piccolo Jr. The saga concludes with Goku defeating the exhausted demon king using the Special Beam Cannon technique, though at the cost of Tien Shinhan's life.
